Re "Early treatment urged for mentally ill" (Our Region, Dec. 21): California has a gun registry for those with mental illness. Expanding that may assure those with rage and delusions never seek treatment so they can always buy guns.
Are we sure everyone who kills is mentally ill? Isn't there permission to murder in America already? From "stand your ground" laws to "justifiable homicide" adherents who celebrate the murder of abortion supporters to violent racists and xenophobes, too many of us sanction killing those who offend us.
We demonize "the other" and carry on the 19th-century lynching mentality with gun violence. How would the mentally ill know it's wrong when so many supposedly sane people think killing others is perfectly OK? By fingering only the mentally ill, we may be totally missing the problem.
