Weekend poll: If the Kings left town, how would you satisfy your basketball jones?

Leading Off: There's more to area basketball than just the Kings

Pardon me while I strangle the idea that we have only one basketball team here.

God bless the Kings, but UC Davis and Sacramento State are playing in the same NCAA category as Duke, Louisville and Indiana. And an NCAA basketball championship is every bit as meaningful as an NBA title.

I sat behind the UC Davis bench the other night and marveled at the Aggies' win over Eastern Washington. Darius Graham locked into everything coach Jim Les said, and he electrified in the open floor. All the freshman from Sacramento High School needs is a mid-range jumper. Hersey Hawkins' kid, Corey, isn't bad, either.

Sac State looks like it's starting to turn things around with a nice win over Montana State in a Big Sky Conference opener Thursday.

I don't want the Kings to leave, but it won't kill me if they do.

Here's hoping Les someday can lead the Aggies into the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the Hornets' biggest issue is they need a new arena as much as the Kings do.

If the Kings ever leave town, Sac State can play at Sleep Train Arena. Win the Big Sky a couple times and fans will support them.

What to watch

NFL, Atlanta at Detroit, 5:30 p.m., ESPN: The Falcons could be one of the teams between the 49ers and the Super Bowl.
