Re "Holiday bike parade won't roll this year" (Our Region in brief, Dec. 19): I was saddened to learn that the Nite Brite Bike Parade won't be held this year due to the high costs required to acquire permits and police escorts, but I can't say I'm surprised.
The city of Sacramento has its standards set too high for what events need a police officer's presence. Where other cities will close a street with a simple barricade, we must post a costly officer and cruiser at every intersection and force the event organizer to cover the cost.
The result is that free events like Nite Brite -- where hundreds of bicyclists cruise slowly and safely alongside similarly slow cars -- die when they grow too large.
