Re "Exxon could tip Iraq into war" (Page A8, Dec. 19): A peaceful mind would wonder why Exxon Mobile would contemplate drilling for oil in a disputed territory in oil-rich Iraq -- an act that could plunge Iraq into a civil war.
Exxon and the anonymous U.S. official who stated that the United States has no authority to "stop people who aren't violating U.S. law" should exhibit sensitivity to Iraq's ethnic structure and understand the Iraqi government's objection to such a move. Exxon has signed a contract to extract oil not to stir ethnic hostility and, as a guest, should abide by Iraqi law rather than U.S law. I'd say Exxon Mobile should leave Iraq before causing destruction to a country which has suffered tremendously in the past two decades.
