Re "Feds rip UC Davis on brain surgeries" (Page A1, Dec. 23): I just recently underwent my third bone marrow transplant at UC Davis Medical Center for multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, and am home recovering.
Multiple myeloma is incurable. Bone marrow transplants are dangerous and patients go through a lot of pain, chemotherapy and life threatening procedures. But without it, I would not be alive.
I owe that to the research done by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the brilliant work of my UC Davis oncologist, Dr. Jeanna Welborn, and my UCD transplant doctor, Dr. Carol Richman.
They have worked tirelessly for me since 2005 and I owe my life to both of them. The treatment I have received from UC Davis Medical Center is second to none, and the nursing staff and administrators with whom I have had the good fortune to interact have been outstanding.
No one knows what risks they will take until they are in that spot.
