2012 was a year we won't soon forget
As the year comes to a close, it's time to look back at the top sports stories of 2012.
From the 49ers, Giants and A's to local high schools, it was a great year to be a sports fan, despite the turmoil surrounding the Kings.
The 49ers nearly made it to the Super Bowl, but that didn't prevent a quarterback controversy; now they're knocking on the door again.
The Giants won the World Series for the second time in three years, without nearly as much torture for fans, and the A's made underdogs everywhere proud with a surprising season.
Granite Bay High School overcame a 1-3 start to win the CIF State Bowl Division I football championship, giving the Sacramento region its third title in five years.
Sheldon played for a state title, too, but came up short against Mater Dei in a foul-plagued basketball game at the arena then known as Power Balance Pavilion.
Speaking of arenas: Perhaps the biggest story of the year was the arena deal for the Kings that fell apart.
Who can forget that celebration at the arena with Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson? It was the final game of the season, and the future was bright, visions of an arena at the downtown railyard dancing in our heads.
But as we all know, the plan came crashing down when the Maloofs pulled out, insisting it wasn't a very good deal for them after all.
And as the year comes to a close, the future of the Kings in Sacramento remains very much in doubt.
Here's hoping that 2013 will be a better year for the Kings and an announcement will soon be made that keeps the team here for many years.
