Sacramento will get a brief break from the wet weather today, but expect more rain in time for Christmas dinner.
National Weather Service forecasters are calling for a half-inch to 3/4 inch of rain in the Sacramento area and eastern suburbs starting late Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday.
The Sierra will get the brunt of the fast-moving storm, with as much as 2 feet of snow expected to fall in the higher elevations beginning Tuesday, said forecaster Jim Mathews. The snowfall will turn to showers later Wednesday.
Mathews suggested holiday travelers to the high country head out later Wednesday afternoon rather than Tuesday night.
Thursday will bring showers to the Sierra, but "it should be a dry day on Friday" in the Sacramento Valley, Mathews said.
Look for a chance of showers Saturday in the lower elevations, but Mathews expects a dry exit to 2012.
