Sacramento received a brief break from the wet weather on Monday after the windy, soaking system that hit the region over the weekend, but more rain is expected in time for Christmas dinner.
And if you are in the high Sierra, welcome to a white Christmas Day.
National Weather Service forecasters call for a half-inch to 3/4-inch of rain in the Sacramento area and eastern suburbs starting late this afternoon and into Wednesday.
The Sierra will get the brunt of the fast-moving storm, with as much as 2 feet of snow expected in the higher elevations today, said forecaster Jim Mathews.
Mathews suggested holiday travelers to the high country head out later Wednesday afternoon, not tonight. Travelers can find information on road conditions by calling the state Department of Transportation at (800) 427-7623 or by using Caltrans' Quickmap feature. The latest storm means more good news for ski resorts including Boreal Mountain Resort near Soda Springs in Placer County.
The weekend's storms dumped as much as 92 inches of new snow in 72 hours, ahead of today's expected storm, said Jon Slaughter, Boreal's marketing director.
The snowfall will turn to showers later Wednesday, forecasters said. But with skies clearing Thursday in the Sierra after some showers, Slaughter anticipates big business at Boreal. "It's perfect conditions for the holiday season," he said.
Thursday will bring showers to the Sierra, but "it should be a dry day on Friday" in the Sacramento Valley, Mathews said. Look for a chance of showers Saturday in the lower elevations, but he expects a dry exit to 2012.
