TRUCKEE -- The Placer County Planning Commission has given the go-ahead to a proposed biomass facility in the eastern county.
The project, approved Dec. 20, will be located on county-owned property near Truckee at the Cabin Creek materials recycling facility off Highway 89 near the Placer/Nevada county line.
The two-megawatt facility will create energy from woody biomass currently being removed from the surrounding forestlands for wildfire protection.
It will use gasification technology to convert, without burning, the biomass material into gas, which in turn will power an internal combustion engine that will turn turbines to produce electricity.
The county and its partners will select a contractor for the project, which will include construction of an 11,000-square-foot building to house the power-generating and emissions-control equipment and a one-acre fuel storage area.
Unless appealed to the county Board of Supervisors by Dec. 31, the commission's approval is final, said county spokesman Robert Miller.
