Sacramento area weather: A little rain, chill, clouds and some sun in forecast

A little rain is forecast for this evening and Saturday morning.

Sunday and Monday are expected to be mostly sunny winter days with temperatures around 50 degrees. Watch out for early morning frost on those days, government weather forecasters warn.

New Year's Eve is expected to be chilly. Cloudy skies expected on Monday night won't be dropping any rain on revelers, according to the National Weather Service.

As the month ends, December 2012 will go into the record books as a wet month. So far, 6.46 inches of rain has fallen in downtown Sacramento.

The normal for December is 2.76 inches. The all-time wettest December was way back in 1852 when the city received 13.40 inches.

The detailed forecast for the Sacramento region from the NWS:

Today: A 30 percent chance of rain after 4pm. Patchy fog before 10am. Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the morning. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. North northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. North northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday night: Patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. North northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Sunday: Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 51. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 5 mph in the morning.

Sunday night: Patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 33.

Monday: Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 50.

Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35.

New Year's Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53.

Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 55.

Wednesday night:A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42.

Thursday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 55.
