Anyone interested in adding to the holiday reading list should consider this latest book offering from Dr. James Andrews entitled "Any Given Monday."
A pioneer of arthroscopic surgery and founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala., Andrews has performed delicate orthopedic procedures on a list of athletes and celebrities that includes Jane Fonda, Dominique Wilkins, Bo Jackson, Brett Favre, Charles Barkley and, most significantly to Kings fans, Chris Webber.
Andrews performed microfracture surgery on Webber after the power forward crumbled to the court during the Kings-Mavericks playoff series in Dallas in 2003.
In his recently released book that is co-authored with well-known sports journalist Don Yaeger, Andrews breaks down the prevalence of injuries in virtually every major sport and several niche sports such as lacrosse, as well and spends a great deal of time on prevention.
His more provocative theories and topics include the following:
The high incidence of injuries among cheerleaders.
The plague of "overuse" and "overtraining" of athletes and how that leads to injuries.
Why radar guns should never be used in youth sports.
The value of offseason conditioning.
Why the number of pitches thrown has the strongest correlation to youth pitching injuries.
