Sacramento police have been asked to investigate a phone scam designed to bilk SMUD customers.
In recent weeks, customers have reported receiving phone calls from someone pretending to represent the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. The caller threatens to shut off a SMUD business customer's electric power unless the customer pays a past-due bill immediately at a payment facility.
The scam attempts were reported by several dozen business customers, the utility said. At least one customer was defrauded of more than $1,000, paying that amount to a bogus payment center.
SMUD emphasized that it never asks customers for financial information by phone or directs them to a payment facility.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call is urged to ask for the caller's name, then hang up and call SMUD to report the incident. Residential customers should call (888) 742-7683; business customers should call (877) 622-7683.
