Re "Shootout casts doubt on public event safety" (Page A1, Jan. 2): I own a gun. Of the 40,000 people in Sacramento's Old Town on New Year's, say 30 were carrying to protect themselves. Suddenly shots ring out. Those 30 see people screaming, running, and pointing.
Want a cop in civilian dress, on every corner with a conceal weapon? Okay. But don't you dare carry a weapon, to protect yourself, around my child. I don't want some trigger happy wannabe playing hero then saying, "Well, I was just trying to protect everyone."
