The real steal: Beer, wine and cocktails range $2 to $6 during happy hour. Appetizers such as shishito peppers and fries or house-made sausages run about $5 to $7.

The vibe: Most of the décor in this cozy restaurant is recycled and refurbished, giving it an eco-friendly feel.

A patio is the first thing you see before you walk inside. Once indoors, there is a wall made of recycled wooden shipping pallets. Mini-ledges hold small glass votives and oil tea lights that add a warm ambiance.

A ceiling made from painter's fabric helps diminish noise levels while adding to the attractive décor.

There are plenty of high tables and booths, along with a lounge area where antique board games are glued to table tops. You can ask a bartender for the pieces and play a game or two.

The bar takes over one wall, and is flanked by two wooden boards painted with images of the California state flag.

A back patio offers plenty of heaters to keep you warm on a chilly evening.

Signature drink: For $6, try the hot-buttered rum. This warm, decadent drink is made with rum and hot-buttered-rum batter and topped with a touch of nutmeg.

Alternative libations: If you're looking for an unusual drink, try one of Hook and Ladder's draft cocktails. These cocktails are served from a tap, with options such as the $8 Jameson stinger and the $9 Negroni. The restaurant also serves wine on tap, along with beer.
