U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be in Sacramento on Monday to formally announce $135 million in federal funding to extend the Regional Transit light rail to Cosumnes River College.
LaHood will be joined by U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, a light-rail advocate.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will take place at the entrance to the college.
RT has already begun work on the $270 million project, which will give south Sacramento and Elk Grove residents a direct rail route to and from downtown and to other points in the RT system.
The overall project includes a garage at the college. Construction is expected to step up this year.
Representatives of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments also will brief LaHood on Monday about plans for a streetcar system in Sacramento and West Sacramento. Local officials hope to solicit federal grant assistance.
