Research shows that when older adults move into a seniors community, that's the last move they count on making during their lifetime.

• How do they find the community that might be appropriate for them?

Any number of senior placement services can provide assistance, whether the need is for retirement living, assisted living or memory care.

Local placement options include Lifetime Solutions,, (916) 343-2378; and Senior Care Solutions,, (916) 965-5565.

• How do they simplify and downsize into a studio or small apartment? How do they shed half a century's worth of belongings?

Start with the kitchen, said Lee Mahla, who belongs to the National Association of Senior Move Managers (website Members specialize in helping seniors downsize and relocate.

"They tend not to have emotional attachment to kitchen implements," Mahla said. "Their confidence level can build from there."

And don't push too much.

"Part of the letting-go process is giving honor to the item by telling the story about it," Mahla said. "But I keep seniors on task. I'm constantly looking at their energy level and whether they're drinking enough water or taking the occasional break.

"We usually work only an hour or two at a time. It's too many decisions, and they're emotional decisions."
