Kudos to: Placer County Sheriff's Office

Accomplishment: Honored for hosting one of the best National Night Out events in the country

Details: National Night Out is celebrated every summer. First-responders in Placer County caravan to dozens of neighborhoods, visiting Neighborhood Watch groups holding ice-cream socials, barbecues and other get-togethers. Sheriff Ed Bonner gave Neighborhood Watch groups credit for the department's win.

Kudos to: Pacific Siamese Rescue

Accomplishment: The Carmichael-based group and its four sister organizations have rescued 20,000 Siamese or Siamese-mix cats

Details: Pacific Siamese has rescued 1,300 Siamese cats, placing them in loving homes. Each cat gets a checkup, is vaccinated, provided medical care and spayed or neutered. The five volunteer-run organizations share a website:

Kudos to: Staff Sgt. Matthew Senna, a native of Sacramento

Accomplishment: Named the Army's 2012 Noncommissioned Officer of the Year

Details: Senna earned the title during a four-day competition that tested top soldiers in physical fitness events, knowledge of military topics, marksmanship, day and night navigation and other tasks and battle drills. Senna, an infantryman with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, plans to make the Army a career.
