A Los Angeles television station has confirmed that Huell Howser, maker of upbeat PBS shows about California for public television, has died at the age of 67.
Television station CBS Los Angeles, quoting Howser's assistant, Ryan Morris, said that the host of PBS' "California Gold" died of natural causes at his home on Sunday.
In late November, Morris said that Howser was retiring from making new episodes. However, Howser had no comment.
At the time, it was also announced that reruns of the shows will continue to air on KVIE in Sacramento, and on other PBS stations.
The Tennessee native and Marine Corps veteran began his television career in Nashville on commercial television. After stints in New York City and Los Angeles, Howser joined public television station KCET in Los Angeles.
"California's Gold," after 19 years in production, has been called unslick and charming. His shows are often sprinkled with Howser uttering "That's amazing!"
