In an ongoing effort to upgrade its online presence, the Social Security Administration has announced new, personalized online accounts for anyone 18 and older who wants to register.
The online accounts are intended as a way to streamline access to the system without having to go to a Social Security office in person.
People can create their accounts at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount, a secure site that will allow them to receive information on their Social Security earnings and estimates of future benefits.
In addition, current Social Security recipients can use their online accounts as a way to access benefit verification letters -- which can be used as proof of income, Medicare coverage and age -- as well as their payment history. They can also go online to change their addresses or update their direct deposit information.
