Ski with a ranger at Heavenly

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013 - 12:31 pm

U.S. Forest Service officials at Lake Tahoe are offering the public a chance to "ski with a ranger" at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

The program allows skiers to learn about the area's natural history, including wildlife, forest health, and Lake Tahoe's cultural history.

Participants will also learn about watershed management issues at Heavenly, which operates on Forest Service land under a long-term recreational lease agreement. Skiers will learn about the mission and role of the Forest Service in ski area management. This includes a focus on controlling erosion, suspected of contributing to the decline of water quality in Lake Tahoe.

"We discuss the watershed health, and various projects that Heavenly and the Forest Service are involved in to increase the health of the watershed," said Megan Dee, conservation education assistant at the Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

The hour-long program is offered at Heavenly on Mondays and Fridays, at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m., from Jan. 18 through April 12. Tours begin near the bottom of the stairs at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. No reservations are required.

Participants must purchase their own lift tickets and be intermediate-level or above skiers or snowboarders.

For more information, contact Megan Dee at (530) 543-2618 or mldee@fs.fed.us, or visit: http://ht.ly/gE2iA.
