Re "Rhee wasn't perfect but had the right focus" (Ginger Rutland, Jan. 10): I applaud Michelle Rhee and Mayor Adrian Fenty for their herculean efforts at education reform.
In the 1980s, I worked as an administrator in the Grant School District for a Superintendent who attempted to enact similar changes, only to be met by resistance from board and union leaders more concerned with their own agendas than the welfare of students.
Not only do students lose when teachers retire on the job, but the job of excellent teachers becomes more difficult. Fenty and Rhee were courageous in their sincere advocacy for students.
