Re "Michelle Rhee wasn't perfect, but had the right focus" (Ginger Rutland, Jan. 10.): Rhee promotes union busting charter schools, merit pay, and an abundance of testing, none of which science validates as effective educational strategies.
Rhee's supporters made the film "Waiting for Superman" to promote the notion that educational failures are really teachers' failures.
Science does confirm that childhood poverty correlates highly with educational outcomes. No doubt, many school systems are imperfect, but focusing on this test-merit pay-charter school baloney distracts from the real problem: Poverty.
