Re "We can't abandon the next generation" (Forum, Jan. 6): As a retired special education teacher who worked in at-risk schools, I have seen the parents abandon their children. I have seen countless parents neglect to come to scheduled meetings and parent conferences where decisions must be made on their children's individual educational needs.
One solution is to hold parents responsible for their children. Parents receiving public assistance must pass drug tests, their children must attend school and receive passing grades, and the parents must attend all scheduled meetings or start losing their benefits. Let's start there. The schools can't do it all.
