Maybe the Sacramento State men's basketball team missed so many free throws Monday night against Southern Utah because it was tired. After all, the Hornets shot 55 of them a school record that eclipsed the old mark of 51 in the mid-1950s.
Or maybe it was the wear and tear of getting roughed up by Southern Utah in earning those trips to the free-throw line. Sac State freshman guard Cody Demps (Pleasant Grove High School) needed several stitches to close a gash over his eye. Several other Hornets sported black and blue bruises that clashed with their new gold uniforms.
The Hornets made just 29 of their attempts, by far a season-low percentage of 52.7, yet hung on to beat Southern Utah 64-59 and even their Big Sky Conference record at 2-2. They improved to 7-5 overall, the program's best mark after 12 games since the 2005-06 season.
"(Southern Utah) came into the game ranked in the top five in the nation in rebounding, so we knew they'd be a big, physical matchup for us," Hornets coach Brian Katz said en route to Thursday night's game at Portland State. "We knew it was going to be a really rough game. But I'm not worried at all about the free-throw shooting. We'll be fine."
Sac State dropped from third in free-throw shooting in the Big Sky to 10th.
Starting guards Dylan Garrity and Mikh McKinney missed five and seven free throw attempts, respectively, Monday night. That's more than each had missed the entire season. Garrity ranked first in the conference from the line, hitting 91 percent (38 of 42) before the Southern Utah game. McKinney was sixth, hitting 87 percent of his free throws (39 of 45).
Hawkins shows how it's done UC Davis sophomore guard Corey Hawkins is ranked 13th in the country with at 91.0 free-throw percentage (71 of 78).
He made all eight attempts in a 74-64 loss to Pacific on Saturday.
More records for Kuhns Sac State forward Kylie Kuhns continues to break many of the Hornets' individual women's records.
On Jan. 5 at Southern Utah, the senior set the school career mark for steals with 182. She broke Kristy Ryan's record of 179 steals (1990-94). Kuhns also owns the school record for career rebounds (1,035).
Kuhns needs 140 more rebounds to break the Big Sky career mark of 1,174 set by Idaho State's Natalie Doma in 2008. Considering Kuhns is averaging 11.9 rebounds a game, she should easily break that record. Her rebounding average leads the conference and is eighth in the NCAA.
The Hornets don't keep an official record for career double doubles. But if they did, Kuhns likely would top the list. She posted the 43rd double double of her career, seventh this season and third consecutive against Southern Utah. She's averaging 13.2 points.
Kuhns was third in the nation last season with 21 double doubles. She went on a season-long streak of 13 consecutive double doubles from Nov. 17 to Dec. 31, 2011.
Consistently inconsistent The UCD women have been streaky all season.
The Aggies started the season with two losses, then won two in a row, lost two in a row, won three in a row and took a three-game skid into Thursday night's game at Cal Poly.
