Re "1789 vs 2013" (Editorial cartoon, Jan. 11): Jack Ohman's cartoon is ridiculously off base and clearly shows a lack of knowledge. Bearing arms is a right not merely to hunt but for defense of home, rights and sovereignty.
To quote some founding fathers themselves:
"I ask, who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers." -George Mason.
"A militia when properly formed are in fact the people themselves. To preserve liberty is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms." -Richard Lee
"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe." -Noah Webster
"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property." -Thomas Paine
There are many more quotes than found here. Ohman, try reading history instead of going on feeling.
