Top wrestlers expected for Brown tournament
Hundreds of the top high school wrestlers from Northern California, Nevada and Oregon will compete Friday and Saturday in the Tim Brown Memorial Wrestling Tournament at the Sacramento Convention Center.
The event begins at 9 a.m. both days, with the finals at 3 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 for adults; $15 for a two-day pass; and $5 for children and seniors.
"We're excited to be able to host this special event again," said tournament founder William Lum, the athletic director and wrestling coach at Foothill High School. "Approximately 850 wrestlers are expected to compete in 14 weight classes. This is a tough tournament. You're going to see some great matches with some top-ranked wrestlers."
Among the area state-ranked wrestlers expected to compete, barring injury, are Oakmont's Peter Santos and Oak Ridge's Keaton Subjeck, No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, at 170 pounds; No. 3 Nick Fiegener of Folsom at 160; and No. 4 Jordan Sepeda of Natomas at 220.
The tournament is named in honor of Tim Brown, a former Foothill High School wrestler who was killed in action in Iraq in 2006.
Sheldon, Deer Valley set for another battle
Deer Valley of Antioch's Marcus Lee, a 6-foot-10 Kentucky signee, and UNLV-bound Kendall Smith return to Sacramento on Saturday to play against Bee top-ranked Sheldon in a nonleague boys basketball game at 7 p.m.
Lee and the 6-3 Smith put on quite a show in beating No. 17 Jesuit 79-59 on Jan. 5 in the Father Kelly Tribute at Jesuit High School. Lee is averaging 17.9 points, 20.6 rebounds and 6.6 blocks; Smith has 23.1 points and 7.1 assists.
Sheldon is ranked No. 3 and Deer Valley No. 5 in Northern California by Maxpreps.com. Both compete in Division I.
Sheldon is coming off an impressive 85-74 win over Bullard of Fresno last Saturday. The win moved Sheldon up to No. 10 (from No. 16) in Maxpreps.com's state rankings while Bullard fell to No. 12 (from No. 8).
The Huskies feature three D-I signees in Dakarai Allen and D'Erryl Williams (both San Diego State) and Darin Johnson (Washington).
Cal-Hi Sports honors Folsom's Browning
Cal-Hi Sports has selected Folsom quarterback Jake Browning as its State Sophomore Player of the Year.
Browning passed for a state single-season record 5,248 yards in helping Folsom (13-1) win the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship and reach the CIF NorCal Open Division game.
Christian Bros. soccer earns academic award
For the fifth consecutive year, the Christian Brothers soccer program earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team 2011-12 Academic Award.
Qualifying girls and boys teams must compile a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher.
