Advocates are seeking volunteers to participate in an annual census of Sacramento County's homeless population.
The "point in time" count of people living in shelters, tent communities and other outdoor locations will take place during the evening of Jan. 24.
Information gathered will help advocates and elected officials refine and identify gaps in services to homeless people, officials said.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development requires communities to conduct the annual "homeless street counts" to demonstrate federal eligibility for money for shelters and supportive housing.
This year, the surveys will be expanded to include questions about age, gender and numbers of children among homeless people.
The final analysis of the count is expected to be released in May.
Volunteers are needed to survey homeless people.
