Re "District notified parents 11 schools may close" (Our Region, Jan. 17): The need to close under-enrolled schools is clear. I can't think of an exception to the closure list where the majority of students are not from poor families. How incredibly unfair to people who have it hard already. SCUSD doesn't provide busing: parents that already have employment and transportation challenges will now also have to find ways to get their kids to schools further from their home community, taking more time from their already stretched lives.
Adding insult, closed schools may sit unused, becoming magnets for vandalism and illegal behavior, where more can scarcely be tolerated, reversing the community connections local schools bring, and further damaging neighborhoods. Another thinning of community, the fabric that holds neighborhoods and people together, fragile or not.
Financial sense to the District? Absolutely. Long-term sense to the community? Of course not. Damn sad we can't work the whole picture.
