What: Rushad Eggleston straps on a cello much the way others strap on a guitar. The result is bluegrass, rock or improvisational cello. He has put that cello to work with the folk-bluegrass group Crooked Still, the Grammy- nominated all-star group Fiddlers 4 and the rock band Tornado River. He shares the stage with fiddler Lily Henley and guitarist-vocalist Emily Elbert.

What: Fifty breweries and 15 wineries offer unlimited tastings as a fundraiser for Runnin' for Rhett. That nonprofit promotes fitness and movement in memory of the late Rhett Seevers, whose severe cerebral palsy made it impossible for him to live a physically active life. Sip away and move to the live music of Mother Mayhem.

Off the beaten path
What: Four-wheel drive may have been on the road since the early 1900s, but it took World War II to prove that it was an indispensable and versatile part of life. This is the last weekend to catch an exhibit that pairs that history with vehicles you can examine up close. Think Jeep but also Unimog and even Volkswagen.

What: More than 200 felines representing 40 breeds will be indifferent to viewers – as cats are wont to be – at the Poppy State Cat Club show. As cat lovers know, no two are exactly alike: long hair, short hair, curly hair, silky hair, pointy ears, folded ears, fat tails, skinny tails, bobbed tails. And to placate the kitty left at home, check out the delights at the vendor booths.

Hands-on history
What: In pre-gold California, pelts were as good as coin of the realm among trappers who hunted, explored and traded with local American Indians. At "Hands-on History: Trappers, Trades and Treaties at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park" you can see and feel for yourself the object of the hunt. Examine fur pelts and learn why trappers were considered "jacks of many trades." Be prepared for cannons and muskets being fired periodically, too.
