Re "It's time to stop ignoring mental illness law" (Forum, Jan. 13): I want to thank the Wilcox and Thorpe families for writing this column. It shows bravery and compassion for those families dealing with a mentally ill member.
Laura's Law is not the only change that needs to happen in Sacramento. We need more resources to decrease the severity of mental illness and prevent unwanted situations.
My son has a mental illness. He has health insurance and health care providers. He is on medication. Still, when he has an event and will not go to the hospital, there is nothing that I can do because he does not fit 5150 criteria for the police to take him.
We need a crisis team in place that will come to the home to evaluate people and have a member of that team be able to do a 5150. Stop saying it's about the money.
