Re "Marines to give meditation a try" (Capitol & California, Jan. 21): Marines be warned: meditation, yoga exercises and exercises based on mindfulness are age-old practices associated with the way of peace.
Of course, when combined with the code of Bushido, they produced extraordinary fighters which the Marine Corps engaged in battle in the South and Central Pacific.
Yet, within meditation one may discover something beyond "yes" and "no", realize thereby that greed, anger and ignorance are indeed the three poisons of life and conclude that giving, patience and profound knowing and understanding are the antidotes to them.
If so, those meditative practices may disable the fighter who realizes, knows and understands from enforcing "yes" and "no" on one who resists.
