Re "To repair government, look beyond Prop. 13" (Forum, Jan. 20): Joe Mathews writes how to get past Proposition 13 in devious ways other than a direct attack.
Mathews didn't live in California back in the 1970's, or he didn't own a home. I had recently purchased a home and had property taxes of $800 per year. The next year, I was to expect an increase to $1200 a year.
There were too many stories of people having to sell their homes because they couldn't afford the tax increases. Retired people, who had paid off their houses, were squeezed out by higher taxes. Also some couldn't move to better neighborhoods due to high property taxes. Mathews should not advocate something that would destroy California's housing market and economy.
