Re "To repair government, look beyond Prop. 13" (Forum, Jan. 20): Joe Matthews calls Proposition 13, which protects property owners against a government that spends every penny it takes in, undemocratic.
His answer is to end Proposition 13 and restore the local accountability that comes with the power to raise taxes on property owners. But isn't that what Proposition 13 was meant to do?
Homeowners were being driven out of their homes due to the crushing burden of property taxes. Mathews views homeowners as sheep ripe for fleecing to finance bigger government.
I never once heard him talk about curtailing politicians' lust for spending. If non-homeowners think socking it to homeowners is a great idea, consider that if your landlord gets hit with massive property tax increases, he or she will raise rents accordingly. If Matthews succeeds in destroying Proposition 13, property owners will pay more and so will you.
