Re "To repair government, look beyond Prop. 13" (Forum, Jan. 20): Apparently, Joe Mathews forgets why Californians overwhelmingly adopted Proposition 13 in 1978. Seniors and retirees were getting taxed out of their homes.
Sadly this is still happening in Tahoe, on the Nevada side. Tahoe residents on the California side are protected.
Funny how Mathews considers this legislation by the people to protect the people anti-democratic, and the reason for our thoroughly dysfunctional governing system.
Maybe he should read the list of agencies that the California taxpayers fund. It's long, redundant, and filled with absurd agencies that Californians should not be burdended with. Mathews was right about one thing: Proposition 13 is based on the distrust of politicians. The would tax and spend all Californians out of their homes, if we let them.
