Re "Elk Grove City Council should appoint Chaires" (Editorials, Jan. 21): During a hearing while I was a member of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, testimony was offered that I should not be able to serve because I was a business owner. The statement seemed so absurd to me that I gave no response.
So I was incredulous to read that The Bee Editorial Board harbors a similar thought. It opined that one applicant for the vacant Elk Grove City Council seat has a conflict that makes him unsuitable. The conflict is that he owns a business in Elk Grove. Never mind that he can recuse himself from certain votes. No, any possibility of a conflict makes him unsuitable.
I am not endorsing either applicant. I agree that both seem capable. But to dismiss one because he does business in the jurisdiction is unfair. Such logic makes many capable candidates, in fact many of our community leaders, unsuitable.
