A guide for what you need to buy, read or consume to enhance your recreation and travel experience

GEAR

Bergans of Norway Sastrugi Down Jacket

$559, www.bergans.com

Way more than 500 bucks for a winter jacket? Really? It'd better be kiln-quality warm, then. Well, according to Outside magazine, an independent product testing company picked the Sastrugi jacket as the best of the top 18 on the market. It is stuffed with 750-fill volume of down feathers, and is fully wind- and waterproof with compression pockets. Still, for this price, we might stay warmer burning dollar bills.

READ

• Dog keeps mountain lion at bay

www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/dogs/Dog-Fights-Off-Mountain-Lion.html

Speaking of Outside magazine, this is a ripping yarn about the majestic and wonderful animal (and also bane of nervous trail users everywhere), the mountain lion. A couple from Colorado, the Burtons, were hiking with their two dogs, Maggie and Stanley. While Maggie cowered behind the couple, read what Stanley did to save the group from the rampaging cat.

THE LIST

• Five places to see in 2013 before they disappear

www.gadling.com

Writer Reena Ganga of Gadling.com says that, with climate change and other natural and manmade factors, you might want to book trips to see these wonders before it's too late:

1. Jungfrau, Switzerland (receding ice cap)

2. "The Last Supper" mural in Milan, Italy, by Leonardo da Vinci (restoration attempts have failed)

3. The Maldives (just 4 feet, 11 inches above sea level and sinking fast)

4. Madagascar (deforestation)

5. Polar bears near the Arctic (global warming)

WATCH

• The World's Shortest Flight

www.theage.com.au/travel

The Scottish airline Loganair operates flights between Westray and Papa Westray islands, a flight lasting all of 47 seconds. No, there's no beverage service en route.
