BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Gary Harris got a chance to show his home-state team what it missed out on Sunday.
He made five three-pointers, defended hard and did enough little things to put Michigan State in position to win, though this one may go down as one that got away.
Victor Oladipo finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and six steals, leading No. 7 Indiana past the 13th-ranked Spartans 75-70.
"I knocked down some shots at the beginning of the second half, and then I just started feeling it," said Harris, the reigning Mr. Basketball in Indiana. "My teammates were finding me in open spots, and I was able to knock down some shots."
Hoosiers fans, still disappointed with Harris' college choice, booed him all day. And while he was 5 for 10 on three-pointers, it was the one that didn't go down – with Michigan State trailing 74-70 and 1:10 to play – that really hurt.
"Gary Harris was phenomenal, but we just couldn't make the big play down the stretch," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said.
Indiana (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten Conference) has won three straight since a Jan. 25 loss to Wisconsin. It has won back-to-back games over the Spartans (17-4, 6-2) after ending a six-game losing streak in the series.
No. 2 Michigan 74, Illinois 60 in Champaign, Ill. – With No. 1 Duke's lopsided loss early last week, the Wolverines could move into the top spot for the first time since the 1992-93 season when the AP poll comes out today. Trey Burke scored 19 points for Michigan (19-1, 6-1 Big Ten). Brandon Paul led the Illini (15-6, 2-5) with 15 points.
No. 17 Creighton 81, Southern Illinois 51 in Carbondale, Ill. – Doug McDermott had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Creighton shot 63 percent from the floor. Gregory Echenique had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and the Bluejays (18-3, 7-2 Missouri Valley Conference) were 12 for 20 from three-point range.
Desmar Jackson led the Salukis (8-12, 1-8) with 16 points.
No. 25 Miami 71, Florida State 47 in Coral Gables, Fla. – Trey McKinney Jones scored 15 points as the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders won their seventh game in a row, ensuring a big jump in the AP poll. The Hurricanes (15-3, 6-0 ACC) drubbed No. 1 Duke on Wednesday.
The Seminoles (11-8, 3-3) are 0-3 against ranked teams.
