Re "Burkle talks to Stern about Kings, arena" (Our Region, Jan. 26): Whether or not Mayor Kevin Johnson can persuade the NBA to stay in Sacramento remains to be seen. But regardless of how it turns out, the city must press forward with development of a new entertainment and sports arena in the deteriorating Downtown Plaza.
A new arena will be a magnet for more urban housing and infill development, and will provide a modern entertainment venue for decades to come. It will also bolster the number of visitors and conventions downtown, providing increased pedestrian traffic at night when it is most needed. Kansas City, Denver, Phoenix, Orlando and Charlotte are just a few examples of how new arenas have revitalized their downtowns. Downtown Sacramento should be the arts and entertainment destination for this region, and a new arena will go a long way to accomplish that.
