Re "A monster should be executed" (Marcos Breton, Jan. 27): Marcos Breton should try thinking things through instead of just expressing the common gut reaction. Richard Hirschfield does not deserve to be executed. He deserves to be tortured within an inch of his life each day for the rest of his life, but even that would not change what he did.
There are unanswered horrors every day. Yes, we feel horror and want justice, even revenge, but the state should not have the power of life or death over any person, and capital punishment does not rid us of inhumanity, it just adds to it. Journalists like Breton have a responsibility to see the bigger picture, not pander to people's outrage.
