Re "Obama's address reveals aggressive liberal agenda" (Viewpoints, Jan. 25): A rebuttal to Charles Krauthammer: The basic idea that government is the problem and that regulating Wall Street or the quality of our air, water and food is not necessary because the free market will make regulation unnecessary has been proven false.
The Republican attempt to dismantle government regulation unilaterally in favor of free market forces ignores the long history of environmental damage done to our rivers, streams, lakes, aquifers, forests, cities and towns caused by unregulated industries that only cared about profits. They ignore the recent meltdown on Wall Street caused by selling mortgage derivatives that were bundled with unsound mortgages and proffered as sound securities. This was unchecked, unregulated fraud made possible by the free market.
