Re "U.S. eyes drone base in Africa" (Page A6, Jan. 29): Here we go again. Our new military involvement in Africa has the potential for spiraling into another major fiasco like Vietnam, Somalia, or Iraq.
Now it's just a few "trainers" and a few drones, but that's how all our military misadventures start; just a few troops, and then a few more, and then -- big surprise -- we're in a big, expensive, bloody mess. And nobody knows, or can remember, how it started. Well right now is how the next big military mess is starting.
Why U.S. troops in Africa? Yes, there are some "bad guys" there perpetrating real atrocities. Most are just local thugs, even if some call themselves al-Qaida. But are they threatening the U.S. in a way that requires us to intervene militarily? No. Now is the time to just say no to US troops and drones in Africa.
