Section realignment undergoes changes
Several schools would move into different leagues under the latest Sac-Joaquin Section realignment proposal released during Tuesday's second realignment hearing for the 2014 to 2018 school years.
Among the changes from the first proposed realignment:
Roseville would move from the Sierra Foothill League, Cosumnes Oaks from the Metro Conference and Oakmont from the Capital Athletic League into the Division II Capital Valley Conference. Instead of moving to the CVC as originally proposed, Rio Americano would stay in the D-III CAL. The CVC would be an eight-team league that would include Antelope, Bella Vista, Del Campo, Ponderosa and Whitney.
With Roseville's departure, the SFL would be a seven-team league of Folsom, Oak Ridge, Del Oro, Granite Bay, Nevada Union, Rocklin and Woodcreek.
Instead of moving to the CAL, as originally proposed, Sacramento would remain in the Metro Conference.
This is not the final proposal. Another hearing is scheduled for Feb. 19 in Stockton.
Del Oro, De La Salle to clash in football
Del Oro football coach Casey Taylor, never one to shy away from a challenge, will take his program into Concord to play national superpower De La Salle in Week 3 of the 2013 season.
De La Salle has gone 236-0-2 against Northern California competition since 1991 and is 37-0 against Sac-Joaquin Section teams since 1979. Since '91, the Spartans have produced nine national No. 1 finishes, including last fall by MaxPreps after a 15-0 season. De La Salle has won five CIF State Championships, including the last four Open bowl titles.
Del Oro has won eight Sac-Joaquin Section titles since 1989, including two under Taylor in recent years, and reached the CIF State Division II Bowl game in 2011.
Herd's baseball coach adds football duties
Jeff Carlson, Elk Grove's baseball coach since 2000, returns to double duty with the Thundering Herd.
Carlson will coach Elk Grove's junior varsity football team, a role he held for eight seasons last decade. Carlson in 2006 and '07 was the Elk Grove varsity football co-coach with Dave Hoskins, and they directed teams that made back-to-back visits to the City Championship.
"I'm ecstatic and excited, fired up," Carlson said.
