Re "Gun control supposition and reality" (Dan Walters, Jan. 30): I believe California gun control laws are already very strict. Firearm regulations have a place but only to an extent. Having stricter gun regulations would only prevent us from protecting ourselves and our loved ones.
The mass shootings at Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook should have taught us to focus on mental health issues the shooters suffered from rather than current gun laws. Law-abiding gun owners should not have to suffer stricter gun laws because of criminals or those struggling to deal with mental illnesses. Criminals will continue to obtain firearms whether or not gun regulations become stricter.
