Re "Arm teachers, lawmaker says" (Capitol & California, Jan. 31): I spent more than 30 years as a teacher and administrator at the high school and community college level. There is a lot of testosterone on those campuses. The notion of arming teachers in the classroom is a total absurdity and incredibly dangerous!
Would the loaded gun go in the desk? A ridiculous thought. Even a locked desk drawer has easy access. So then do the teachers strap the guns to their bodies while they teach? While they conduct a science lab or lead the students through "Hamlet?" And would they go regularly to the necessary training?
Put officially armed and trained guards on campuses if you absolutely must, but trying to arm teachers in our classrooms would lead to disaster and be destructive of education and our schools.
