Police arrested a CalPERS employee on Friday on suspicion of identity theft.
Authorities booked 40-year-old Koren Lamar into Solano County jail, according to a Vacaville Police Department press release, after a victim, who is currently receiving retirement benefits, reported several loans taken out using the victim's personal information and without the victim's knowledge.
Vacaville police worked with CalPERS and arrested Lamar on Friday morning after serving search warrants in Sacramento at a Fulton Avenue apartment and at CalPERS' P Street headquarters, where she works.
Authorities believe Lamar acted alone and that "a relatively small" number of victims may emerge in the ongoing investigation.
CalPERS, which handles pension and health benefits for 1.6 million public employees and their families, said that it has seen few identity information breaches and is committed to data security.
