Re "American deaths in Afghan war drop to 4-year low" (sacbee.com, Jan. 31): Most Americans may think a drop in American deaths means a success in the war, but Afghans have a different view about the future of this war.
I am one of them. I came back from Afghanistan a few weeks ago. While there, I talked to many people, asking about this war. The majority of Afghans are pessimistic. The general perception is that after the U.S. military leaves in 2014, the current government will not be able to handle the situation. Business investment has dropped significantly, and the price of real estate dropped about 50 percent because Afghans believe that after 2014, the Taliban will regain control of the country.
