Re "Guns rule life in south area neighborhood" (Page A1, Feb. 3): Congratulations to Bee writers Cynthia Hubert and Phillip Reese for their informative and most disturbing article regarding gun violence in south Sacramento. One can hope politicians at both national and local levels will listen to their constitutents when it comes to addressing gun violence.
Looking at the identified number of gun crimes, Lemon Hill residents understand the value of enhanced law enforcement activity. The listed gun control proposals by the California Legislature, Congress and President Barack Obama would have little if any impact on controlling gun violence. All are targeting the law-abiding citizen. Maybe our good intentions would be better served if all street gangs were designated as terrorist groups. Focus on the criminal. Have federal, state and local law enforcement declare an all-out war on street gangs with a mandatory 10-year federal prison sentence upon the conviction of a gun felony.
