One person is dead and another faces manslaughter and child endangerment charges after a two-vehicle accident early Sunday on El Camino Avenue near Colfax Street, Sacramento police said.
A 24-year-old woman, suspected of driving while intoxicated with her two young children in the back seat, was arrested in connection with the crash.
Four men were traveling westbound on El Camino Avenue in a sport-utility vehicle about 3:45 a.m. when their vehicle was struck from behind by a sedan traveling at high speed, according to Officer Michele Gigante, a Sacramento police spokeswoman.
The collision caused the SUV to spin out and hit a tree, Gigante said. Two passengers in the back seat were ejected, and one, a man about 30 years old, died at the scene.
The other ejected passenger and the passenger in the front seat were taken to area hospitals. The SUV's driver did not require medical attention.
The driver of the sedan, Reena Ashlie Sanchez, also was taken to a hospital. She was released about 11:30 a.m. and booked into the Sacramento County jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and child endangerment, Gigante said.
The driver's children, ages 1 and 2, were strapped into their car seats in the back of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
They were treated at a local hospital and released to the custody of Child Protective Services.
