Re "Scratch coyote hunt, say wolf fans" (Capitol & California, Feb. 2): I want to register my horror at finding out about this scheduled contest. This is nothing more or less than institutionalized savagery. I have heard it said that the human being is the smartest creature on the planet. But what kind of "smart" species would find the destruction of another species enjoyable? These are the same people who perpetuate a culture of violence in the United States, which eventually effects all of us.
Not only is the coyote threatened but so is the wolf, OR-7. I guess the "smart" people who dreamed up this contest gave no thought to collateral damage. Or, more precisely, they don't care. I urge decision makers to insert some sanity into the madness and stop this hunt.
