Re "Pair of teen passengers mourned" (Page A1, Feb. 5): This story is truly tragic. However, it could also have been avoided. While it's unknown whether the driver's parents knew their son had other teen passengers in his car in violation of the law, what is known is that he chose to have more people in his car then seat belts.
Along with accepting the responsibility to drive, he must also accept the responsibility to make sure everyone in the car is wearing a seat belt. By all means, he knew he was in violation of the law, and was most likely speeding on a winding road. He should be charged in this matter.
I only hope the mother in the photo, who drove her children to the accident site to place the ubiquitous flowers and stuffed animals, also drills into her daughters' heads that there are laws for a reason and to always wear their seat belt.
